The Chinese Room, Duck Typing, and Why DevOps Is Now Psychology
private-2026-03-16-chinese-room-devopsThe Thought
John Searle's Chinese Room (1980) + Turing Test (1950): How do you know if the response from a black box is from a human or a machine? If you can't see the CPU, RAM, GPU — just input and output — does it matter what's inside?
Python's duck typing: if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck.
The Real Point
It's less about AI vs human in the box. It's about properly scoping work so you actually get what you expected.
- You can ask "make it secure and don't make mistakes" — but that's too broad.
- Unless the AI understands the project.
- If you ask for a bird, it might not be a duck.
- If you ask for a duck, you might need to explain what a duck is first.
With How Much Detail? That's the Right Question.
Technology has always been about knowing enough. We have to trust our ancestors at some point. We can't know everything before we need to take action. We have to know when to outsource, and where to focus our own attention.
The Thesis
Development Operations, in the age of AI, is a psychology problem.
DevOps used to be about teams. Now it's about personal project management.
Speed is democratized. Why are you still standing still?
